Rescue Animals
Over the years I have become increasingly involved with the rat community and rescue work. All of our rats since 2006, and most of the ones before then, have been rescues. I am particularly drawn to rats with special needs of some sort, be they aggressive, nervous, lonely, old or unwell. For me there is nothing better than giving these rats lots of love and patience, and watching them blossom into healthy, happy, friendly and well-adjusted little people.
While I am able to take on some of the more challenging rescue cases, not everyone feels able to. But the good news is that not all rescue animals are like this. Many are healthy and well-adjusted and just need somewhere to call home. When taking on any pet, it would be really lovely if you could consider rescues as so many have to be killed every day for no reason other than there just isn't enough space for them.
A common argument against getting rescue animals as opposed to those from a breeder or petshop is that people want the cute babies. But even they end up in rescue. Some are born there, or in foster homes, and are incredibly confident as they have received plenty of handling. Although, if you have the chance, please do consider the adults, as they have so much love to give and so often get overlooked for the little ones.
I do not support the buying of animals from petshops, for reasons outlined in the linked article.
