Why Kahini?
Kahini is a Sanskrit word meaning 'mischievous'. I chose this name for two main reasons. Firstly, rats as a species are such cheeky, fun loving animals that the word 'mischievous' sums them up rather well. Secondly, a group of rats is known as a mischief (strange but true!).
How it all began
My mum had a pet mouse who went everywhere with her when she was young. When I was a toddler, she took me and my sister to a petshop (before we knew better) to get a pair of mice. They didn't have any and offered us rats instead. Well, thought my mum, they're just like big mice aren't they? So, Sara and Kara came home with us. I was too young to fully appreciate them, but my mum never forgot how wonderful it was to have rats around.
After that, we had a break of a few years, and then in Spring 1997 we went to a rat show. We came back with a couple of kittens (baby rats), Misty and Cloudy, from two different breeders there. And that was it, we were hooked. With the exception of a short break of a few months, which I hated, we have not been without rats since then.
